Good leaders come in many forms, but one commonality is they are all good at predicting.  Predicting is not something that is easily done, especially in these times of volatility in the marketplace.  I like Bill Northey's comment though, which you'll read in his interview with Feed Energy in this newsletter, "farmers were talking about volatility in the 1800s."  If studied, I bet those that survived the farm crisis in those times were good predictors.  Read More

Feed Energy recently had the opportunity to sit down with Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Bill Northey to discuss issues impacting Midwest poultry and livestock producers.  Bill Northey

Where do you see the agricultural economy headed?  That is the million or multibillion dollar question.  One thing is that the world needs the commodities we are producing.  Our infrastructure allows us to serve the world and the demand remains strong, so overall I see the agricultural economy remaining stong.  I have to think it will have a more international aspect to it whether it be supplying feed to the world or buying feed ingredients from overseas.  I certainly don't have a feel for what commodity pricing will do but it seems like we will have even greater volatility. Read More

Pilots work long hours, away from their families and many times in tense situations with many lives depending on their success.  So it's understandable when the last thing they want to do is fill out a lengthy maintenance report.  That was the case when a pilot reported an issue on their aircraft stating, "Unfamiliar noise coming from No. 2 engine."  Since this didn't give the maintenance staff much to go on, maintenance's solution report read, "Engine ran for 3 hours, noise now familiar." 

How often do we have an unwelcome noise in our business but because we run with it long enough we now are immune to hearing it?  Operational excellence is about identifying those noises, making them uncomfortable again, and fixing them.  Read More

Information in this new quarterly column is provided courtesy of The Monthly Layer, a joint publication of Decision Innovation Solutions and Feed Energy. 

Compared to other years, the national, average cash cost of producing eggs in 2011 has been extremely elevated.  While costs during the summer months are typically higher than the annual average costs, during June through August the cost of producing a dozen eggs has averaged approximately 88 cents per dozen - the highest average ever for this period.  In fact, this cost of production exceeds the previous high in 2008 by nearly 17 cents per dozen.  Read More
