Moving Forward
By Mike Shindelar, Executive Director Mike Shindelar

Forward motion by in large is a positive thing – your favorite football team driving for the end zone, even the batter hitting a sacrifice fly to advance the base runner.  Positve forward motion with a clear goal and direction is, well, a winning combination, in business and in life. Unfortunately, in business, companies often fall short in articulating their goals, leaving employees and customers wondering, "what's my part?" or "why is my role important?"  Customers are left to speculate on the value an organization brings to their bottom line, figuratively and from a value proposition.  Without communicated goals, how does an organization maintain focus and move forward – advance the runner, if you will?  Read More

Are You Just Floating Down the River?
By Joe Riley, Director-Supply Relationship Management
Joe Riley

At its source in Lake Itasca it is possible to wade across the Mississippi River.  Just 20 feet wide and a few feet deep the calm, clear waters give no indication of the formation of one of the greatest rivers in the world.  Fifty plus cities and 18 million people rely on the Mississippi River for their water supply.  The Mississippi Basin produces 92% of the nation's exports and 78% of the world's exports in feed grains and soybeans. Sixty percent of all grain exported from the U.S. is shipped on the Mississippi River.  At least 260 species of fish call the river home and 60% of all North American birds use the river during migration.  More than 145 amphibians and 50 mammal species call the river home.

From its humble start as a small stream to its destination at the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River adds value at every turn to people, animals and the environment...a true value stream.  In business, a value stream is sequences of activities required to design, produce and provide a specific good or service in which information, materials and worth flows are added.  Read More

Cargill — At the Core Cargill

Cargill is a growing company that is focused on its core values.  In 1865, William Wallace Cargill started with one grain storage warehouse in Conover, Iowa.  Today, Cargill is a $110 billion company that operates in 66 countries with more than 131,000 employees worldwide.  One would think growth could be credited to the right products, at the right time and right price.  In fact, much of the credit, according to Cargill employees, is a result of a history of finding, setting and staying true to its core values – the same core values shared today by Paul Frisbie and the rest of the Cargill Pork team.  Read More

Feed Energy Reacts to Missouri River Flooding

Thousands of acres, hundreds of homes and many lives were and still are impacted by the flooding along the Missouri River.  Feed Energy was also impacted by this flooding in our Pacific Junction location.  In early June, Feed Energy, anticipating the Missouri River flood waters sweeping through its Pacific Junction plant (the worst case scenario predicted 10 feet of water for two months) Feed Energy's Leadership Team recognized two critical needs for action – keeping employees safe and continuing to meet customers' needs for our products.  Read More
